Zoya Akhtar shares she took Luck By Chance’s box office failure ‘very badly’: ‘I owe critics my self-esteem’

Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut, Luck By Chance, remains to be one of her most acclaimed films. In a recent interview, Zoya explained that though her 2009 film is her most commended work, it didn’t mint any money and she took its box office failure ‘very badly.’

Speaking on Galatta Plus, Zoya explained that despite starting strong in the film industry with Luck By Chance, she never goes back to her past work and thinks about what happened. Rather, she chooses to focus on her next project. She said, “Luck By Chance was really acclaimed but it made no money. I feel I owe critics my self-esteem for that period because I survived because of those reviews. You take it very badly when something that you have worked on and nurtured comes out and doesn’t do well. I cannot express what it felt to be validated in that way. I just survived. I just felt someone was getting me.”

During the interview, Zoya spoke on the possibility of the sequel to her 2011 film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and said, “I am not going to make any comments on that.” The filmmaker, however, shared her excitement for her brother and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar’s next directorial Jee Le Zaraa, and said, “I think what’s most exciting now is Jee Le Zaraa that Farhan is making. He is going to have a blast directing that.”

Jee Le Zaraa stars Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. Earlier, Farhan shared an update on the film and cleared that the film is delayed due to date issues of the actors. He said, “We just have issues with dates, and the actor’s strike that’s happened in the US has put Priyanka’s dates into a huge tizzy with what can happen and what can’t, so I’ve started genuinely believing that that film now has a destiny of its own. It’ll happen when it has to, we’ll see.”

Jee Le Zaraa was announced in 2021. The film will mark Farhan’s return to direction after 2011’s Don 2. The filmmaker, however, has also announced Don 3 with Ranveer Singh. Zoya, on the other hand, is busy with the promotions of The Archies, which will start streaming on Netflix on December 7.
