Writer-director-actor Zeishan Quadri, who penned the screenplay of Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur,’ has opened up about how the film was a game changer. Besides writing the film, Zeishan also starred in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2.’ He also revealed that work on ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur 3’ is currently put on hold due to complications surrounding the rights and royalties of the film.
In an interview with Times of India, Zeishan said that Gangs of Wasseypur was a ‘game changer’ and added that he hit a sixer with his very first project. The screenwriter added that he could not compare any project with that film and promised that he would bring something bigger than ‘Wasseypur.’ Zeishan also revealed that Anurag Kashyap is also working hard to make something ‘bigger’ than Gangs of Wasseypur.
The screenwriter further said that Kashyap was impressed with ‘Meeruthiya Gangster’ and wanted him to direct Wasseypur 3. He added that the writing of the film took some time and then Kashyap came with the producers. But, the film got stuck because Anurag’s “deal with rights” didn’t go through.
Recently in an interview with Outlook, Zeishan opened up about how the film has been halted for now.
He said, “We spoke about making ‘Gangs of Wasseypur 3’. During lockdown also, we sat and spoke about it and when things didn’t work out, he (Kashyap) got upset. It has been halted as of now. He is the one who will take the call again. Maybe he will direct or maybe I or maybe he will only produce. So, right now, I can’t say anything about it.”
Last year, Anurag Kashyap revealed why he is not interested in making a sequel or spin-off of Gangs of Wasseypur. Lashing out at the studio of the film, Viacom 18, he told Pinkvilla, “Nobody got any money from that film. And on that film, one studio earned so much money. They ask us, ‘extend our rights, let’s do a spin-off’, I tell them, why do you want to make a sequel of a flop film?” The Dobaaraa director added, “The studio has cheated its creators and the actors, and everybody involved with the film.”
Gangs of Wasseypur starred Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha, Huma Qureshi, Tigmanshu Dhulia and Pankaj Tripathi among others in pivotal roles. The film is counted among the best Hindi movies.
