Although she was engaged to actor Abhishek Bachchan in 2002, poised to join the legendary Bachchan family as bahu, their relationship did not last long, and the two called off their engagement a few months later, following which Karisma Kapoor tied the knot with industrialist Sunjay Kapur the very next year. However, they parted ways just over a decade later. Parents to two children, Karisma and Sunjay’s divorce battle was, however, ugly.
While Sunjay, who passed away on June 12, alleged that she married him for money, Karisma’s father, veteran actor Randhir Kapoor, lashed out at him once, accusing the industrialist of infidelity and debauchery. Randhir also reminded him that they don’t need anyone’s money, as they belong to the Kapoor khandan.
“Everyone knows our credentials. We are Kapoors. We don’t need to run after anyone’s money. We have been blessed with not only money, but our talent can support us for the rest of our lives,” Randhir Kapoor shared during a chat with Hindustan Times in 2016.

The legendary actor also went one step further and revealed that he, in fact, was opposed to the idea of his daughter marrying the industrialist. “I never wanted Karisma marrying him. He never cared for his wife. He has been giving bull**** to her and living with another woman. The entire Delhi knows how he is. I would not like to say anything more than this,” he added.
According to Forbes, Sunjay had an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion (Rs 10,300 crore) at the time of his death, and he joined the ranks of the World’s Billionaires in 2022. A large chunk of this comes from Gurugram headquartered Sona Comstar, which operates 12 manufacturing facilities and employs over 5,000 people across India, China, Mexico, Serbia, and the US.
Sunjay took over the reins of the company after his father, Dr Surinder Kapur, passed away in 2015. At present, the company has a market cap of Rs 10,300, and has seen huge boost from the electric vehicles (EV) space over the recent years.
Their divorce was finalised in 2016. As per Daily News and Analysis (DNA), the industrialist paid the actor a whopping Rs 70 crore in alimony. A 2016 ANI report also stated that he had purchased bonds worth Rs 14 crore for their two children, with an annual interest payment of Rs 10 lakh. He also transferred ownership of a house previously owned by his father to Karisma.
