Vishal Bhardwaj shares his regrets about Kangana Ranaut-starrer Rangoon, says he should’ve disowned the film: ‘VFX was not right’

Vishal Bhardwaj shared his regrets about his 2017 film Rangoon, and said that he should have put his foot down when he was pressured into meeting the decided release date.

Vishal Bhardwaj, who has directed films such as Omkara, Maqbool, Haider, among many others, recently shared the few misgivings that he has about his 2017 film, Rangoon, which starred Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan. Vishal said that while he has no regrets about his creative decision-making in the film, he certainly regrets how the ending turned out.

Speaking to mid-day, Vishal said, “I should have put my foot down in Rangoon and said I don’t care about the release date. The VFX is not alright in the final scene… Those kind of pressures. Everyone’s like, ‘No, it will be a huge loss…’ At that time, you should become Sanjay Leela Bhansali, no matter how much loss there is, things wouldn’t go like that.”

Vishal also shared that Rangoon was made on a budget of Rs 35 crore, when it needed Rs 70 crore. He said it was a mistake to accept a lesser amount as the budget of the film as he felt overconfident after Haider. “You regret those decisions. I don’t regret my creative thought of Rangoon. It was very pure, very unique. But, of course, a film that should be made in Rs 70 crore, and I have decided to make it in Rs 35 crore, then I am foolish,” he said.

The director also said that much like Shekhar Kapur, he should have disowned Rangoon. He quoted the example of The Four Feathers which, as per Vishal, was disowned by Shekhar two years after its release. “I should have learnt something from Shekhar Kapur and disowned the movie,” he said with a laugh. Vishal said that his VFX supervisor “ditched him” because he wanted to make his own short film, but added, “I don’t blame others for my own mistakes.”

Vishal Bhardwaj recently directed the Netflix film Khufiya.
