As the legendary cricketer Virat Kohli announced his retirement from the Test format on Monday, a host of film celebrities shared best wishes for him on social media. One of them was actor Anil Kapoor, who said that he met Kohli only once, 11 years ago, but the cricketer left a lasting impression on him.
“We met eleven years ago on a cruise when Anushka was shooting Dil Dhadakna Do. I still remember how warm, humble, and down-to-earth you were- it left a lasting impression on me. Since then, I’ve been admiring you from afar- your discipline, passion, and the sheer joy and pride you’ve given us through your incredible achievements on the field,” wrote Kapoor on his Instagram Story.
“Though we haven’t met again since, I’ve always been cheering for you. Congratulations on everything you’ve accomplished. You may have retired from Test cricket, but you’ll never retire from the hearts of 1.4 billion Indians- and millions more around the world. Thank you, Virat,” the actor added.
Kapoor and Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma were co-stars in Zoya Akhtar’s 2015 hit family drama Dil Dhadakne Do. While he played the father of the lead actors Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra’s characters, Sharma played a dancer and Singh’s character’s love interest. The film was shot mostly on a cruise which travelled across countries. It was produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment.
Sharma and Kohli began dating in 2014. They tied the knot in a secret wedding ceremony in Tuscany, Italy in 2017. She gave birth to daughter Vamika in 2021 and son Akaay last year. Sharma has taken a step back from acting as her last film as a lead actor was Aanand L Rai’s romantic comedy Zero in 2018. She’s shot for cricketer Jhulan Goswami’s biopic Chakda ‘Xpress, but the film is awaiting release on Netflix India for years.
Sharma also reacted to Kohli’s retirement announcement on Monday, sharing a picture with her husband on her Instagram handle, with the caption, “They’ll talk about the records and the milestones — but I’ll remember the tears you never showed, the battles no one saw, and the unwavering love you gave this format of the game. I know how much all this took from you. After every Test series, you came back a little wiser, a little humbler and watching you evolve through it all has been a privilege.”
“Somehow, I always imagined you’d retire from international cricket in whites. But you’ve always followed your heart, and so I just want to say my love, you’ve earned every bit of this goodbye,” she added. Kohli turned up in 123 Tests for India, scoring 9,230 runs with 30 hundreds at an average of 46.85. Kohli will only play in ODIs now, having already retired from T20 Internationals last year.
