Action director Sham Kaushal, father of actors Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal, recently shared that 20 years ago, he was diagnosed with cancer, and doctors told him that he didn’t have too long. Not only did Sham recover, he said that he also experienced the best phase of his life following the diagnosis.
In a chat with Rajshri Unplugged, Sham said that back in 2003, he had just come back from Ladakh after the shoot of Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya. “As soon as I got back, there were a lot of complications in my stomach. Some time in October, I had to get admitted in Nanavati Hospital,” he recalled. The action director said that after the surgery and the biopsy, he was told about his cancer diagnosis. “The doctors said that I won’t survive,” he said, as he got emotional.
Sham recalled that his children – Vicky and Sunny – were teenagers at the time. Vicky was around 15, and Sunny was almost 14. “I accepted that fact that I won’t survive, so I prayed to God that I am not unhappy, I am 48. I started from nothing and I have achieved a lot. You take me away but if you are going to save me, then don’t make me a weak person. I can’t live like a weak person,” he said.
Sham recalled that as soon as he prayed, all his fears went away. He underwent a few surgeries and after 50 days of staying in the hospital, he was discharged, and he gradually recovered. “After they said I won’t survive, I saw the best days of my life. I won all the awards after 2003. My best films came after that. My kids became successful after that,” he shared.
In an earlier interview with The Times of India, Sham had shared that he had tried to return the signing amount of Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday, as he was supposed to be the action director on the film, but the filmmaker decided to wait for him to recover. In the same interview, Sham had said that he thought about ending his life since, there was no hope for his recovery. “I thought there’s no chance of me surviving. I had even decided that I would end my life by jumping off the third floor because I couldn’t live like that,” he said.
