Actor turned author Twinkle Khanna has shared her experience of juggling multiple responsibilities as a woman. Twinkle pointed out the irony in advocating for equality in marriage, yet accepting that household tasks will still predominantly be a woman’s job. Twinkle is married to actor Akshay Kumar.
In a discussion with journalist Faye D’Souza on Tweak India, Twinkle said, “We’re women who think that we are fairly progressive, and yet, this food, the house, the curtains, the diapers – it’s still our job, along with having a full-time job. What have we done to ourselves? Feminism has come and bitten us in the a**. I was this big flag bearer of equality. But equality has meant double the work. It’s not okay. So I’m equal; you will treat me with respect, but I’m doing double of everything. It’s tough either way.”
Twinkle shared that in the morning, when her daughter Nitara sees her with a computer, she instinctively turns around because she assumes that Twinkle is busy. Despite wanting to spend time, she feels the need to return to work to avoid losing valuable hours. Twinkle then joked, “They’re going to wind up in therapy regardless and blame us. So, I’m not worried about that.”
Twinkle and Akshay are parents to a son named Aarav and they also have a daughter named Nitara.
