Hindi films, with the exception of Stree 2, have been having a hard time at the box office for many months now. While the year 2024 has been difficult for most Indian film industries, there has been an impression in the Hindi speaking states that the regional film industries are churning out more successful films than Bollywood. In a recent interview, when Taapsee Pannu was asked this question, the Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba actor said that the proportion of hits and fails is pretty much the same in all film industries.

In a chat with ANI, when Taapsee was asked why southern film industries were doing better than Hindi, the actor said that an audience sitting in a Hindi-speaking state only gets exposed to the hit southern films and does not really get to know about the films that are out of the theatres in the first week. “There also films fail, there also films don’t work after 3-4 days and they are out of the theatre. It’s just that you don’t get to know about it sitting here. If you are staying in that state or if you follow every release of that industry, you will realise that they also have equal proportion of hits and flops. It’s not that different,” she said.

Taapsee then pointed out that the movie viewing culture in south is quite different as compared to Hindi and said that in south, “movie viewing is almost like a religious activity. People are movie lovers. It’s a ritual there.” She added that it is “relatively difficult to pull out a Hindi movie viewing audience from their houses to go and watch the film.”

Talking more about the south film industry, Taapsee was asked about the fundamental difference in the work culture of both these industries. When asked if the southern film industry is more organised and more disciplined, Taapsee said that it is not necessarily the case. “Having worked in both the industries, I can tell you it’s not the case,” she shared. She said that when she started working in south, which was before her Hindi film debut, she never got any bound scripts and would just get dialogue sheets on a day-to-day basis, as opposed to Bollywood films.

“Till the time I was there in the southern film industry, I didn’t get any bound scripts for any of my films. I used to only get scenes and a lot of things used to change on set. I think now, probably, it’s better there as well. But when I started in Hindi, my first film Chashme Baddoor, even though it was a David Dhawan film who is known as the director from the time when everything was written on the spot, even that film had a bound script,” she said. She added that even makers like Anurag Kashyap, who change many things on set, gave her a proper script.

Taapsee was recently seen in Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba and Khel Khel Mein.
