The legal dispute over late entrepreneur Sunjay Kapur’s fortune has reached the next level after his children, from his marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, have approached the Delhi High Court, challenging a will allegedly written by their father, which they suspect could be “forged and fabricated”. While hearing a petition filed by Samaira and Kiaan Kapur, Sunjay and Karisma’s children, seeking a share in the Rs 30,000 crore estate of their late father, the HC directed Sunjay’s widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, to disclose all movable and immovable assets he owned at the time of his death. Interestingly, Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, had also challenged the will that left Priya as the sole inheritor of Sunjay’s fortune.
Expressing elation at the HC direction, Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, maintained that this would help bring more clarity to the matter. Maintaining that she wholeheartedly supports Karisma’s children in the legal battle, Mandhira expressed bafflement that the will did not earmark anything for them, despite Samaira and Kiaan sharing such strong bonds with their father. “I stand by them because I do not think that if anyone knows the relationship they have had with their father and for their father not to have them a part of the will is just doesn’t add up. Doesn’t make sense. So I stand by them,” she told news agency ANI.
Referring to the latest development, she said, “I’m very happy about it because finally the family will know something and have some knowledge about anything really. I believe in the justice system in India, so I’m hoping it will bring more clarity, more visibility and transparency to everything.”
Challenging Sunjay’s will alongside Samaira and Kiaan, Rani Kapur argued that she had been completely blocked from claiming the Rs 10,000 crore that she felt entitled to. “All gone. I am nowhere. Ms Sachdeva comes in, and within three months of her getting married, everything goes? My son today leaves me on the road, with not a roof on my head?” she had said earlier. Reacting to their mother’s claims, Mandhira noted, “My mother did not help set up the trust. She is still trying to find out about the trust… We’re still asking for answers, and we’re getting nothing.”
When asked about the possibility of reconciliation within the family, she observed, “Right now, there are a lot of answers that are needed. Earlier, it was just Mom. Now it’s the kids involved. It’s all of us. Now everyone wants answers. I think unless we don’t have answers and we don’t have a sit-down and be able to ask the questions and get clarity on answers and no hiding stuff and covering up stuff, and unless it’s an open field, I don’t think we’re going to be able to do anything.”
She added, “We’re not asking for what is not our right. My dad created all this. My dad created it for my mother. My brother grew it, like all Indian families do. And then it was supposed to be distributed equally among the families. So again, one person has come in and taken everything, and my mother doesn’t even have a roof over her head.”
Meanwhile, Rani Kapur’s lawyer, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, stated that the “real fight” was between Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev. “This fight is really more between Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev — whether there is a will or there is no will etc. Rani Kapur does get impacted by it, but she will file a response, and you will know her stand,” he told ANI.
One of the biggest female stars in Bollywood in the ’90s, Karisma Kapoor, a member of the prominent Kapoor family, tied the knot with divorcee Sunjay Kapur in 2003. While they had Samaira in 2005, Kiaan was born in 2011. However, the couple parted ways a decade later, and their divorce was finalised in 2016. Following their split, Sunjay married for the third time in 2017 and officially welcomed Priya Sachdev into his life. They remained married until Sunjay’s demise in June this year.
