The aftermath of Sunjay Kapur’s death turned ugly as the inheritance feud and the control of the company, Sona Comstar, between the family members took the spotlight. Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, demanded a probe into Sunjay’s death and also alleged coercion and questioned appointments made by the company after that. The company appointed Sunjay’s wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, as a non-executive director of Sona Comstar a few days after his death. Now, Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has alleged that she, her mother Rani Kapur, and her sister Superna Motwane have been thrown out of the company.
Speaking about the feud to India Today, she said, “Instead of letting the family grieve, everybody is worried about the money. Everyone has forgotten the legacy and the fact that my mother is still alive. The three women of our family have been left alone. Just because we don’t have a man left does not mean that we are weak. We have been thrown out because we are three women left.” She added, “My mother stood behind my father when he build this company. We three children were a part of it. We are a part of this legacy and today we have nothing left.”
Mandhira shared that her family is waiting for answers from the heads of her father’s company. She said, “We are waiting to see if an olive branch is extended to us in the right manner. We have asked to see everything that has happened in 13 days. We are getting no answers. We want to know what my mother signed, and we are not getting any answer.”
When asked, who is the person she is expecting the olive branch from, she responded, “I guess Sona Comstar, whoever has taken it. Whoever is involved in taking this away from us. I am sure they know who they are because we don’t.”
She also opened up on why her mother questioning Sunjay’s death despite his death been officially ruled as a natural death by the Surrey Coroner’s Office in the UK. She said, “When someone is very fit, who does medical test all the time and who have grown up doing these tests every six months. Who never had a heart problem, who we were first told was stung by a bee, is now had a cardiac arrest. Who would not question it?” She added, “There is no sign of a bee in the autopsy report, but we were told that he was stung by a bee. Then suddenly there is a cardiac arrest when he has never had any heart problem.”
Mandhira also went on to speak about her estranged relationship with her brother and and how they fought a legal battle over a family matter, a case that eventually went against her. She spoke about how her history with her brother cast doubt on her stand in this inheritance battle. “I don’t care because that’s between brother and me. It is something which was made public because that’s what people love. Nobody knows that he did close it with me. We closed it very amicably. I don’t care what the world things I know the relationship I had with my brother. It’s sad that this is being taken away from me. We have had 40+ years of an amazing relationship, it’s really sad. I have lost him and I never got to make up with him.”
She also spoke about her Instagram post that she posted after Sunjay’s death. In the post, she mentioned that she had no communication with her brother for the past four years. Speaking about why their relationship went south, she said, “Because of the brand owner. That’s when I started finding out about stuff and I used to question my mother and she used to say that there is nothing there. We went back and forth only to find out that we were fighting about Sona the brand which my dad created. If we would have sat down and talked, I don’t think we would have gone to the level at which we went, it was just both of us with an ego. It was the stupidest thing to have gone down.
She admitted that her fight with Sunjay left their mother heartbroken. “My mother wasn’t happy in those four years. I think that was the toughest thing for my mother to go through. I think our ego put her through that. I feel bad that she went through that,” she said.
When asked about her own company in the UK that recently filed for bankruptcy and how that puts a question on her trying to save the Kapoor Legacy. Speaking on the same, she said, “It didn’t go through bankruptcy. It’s called insolvency because I sold a stake of my company and we decided to close the subsidiary. My father and his legacy is way bigger than one insolvency. People do insolvency all the time. It doesn’t bother me. I’m still innovating, and I’m taking my father‘s name forward. I am in innovating in UK in automotive. These are not the things that are going to scare me.”
