Actor and singer Shruti Haasan is known for her multilingual skills and her work across multiple film industries in the country. She credits her love for languages to her father, legendary actor Kamal Haasan. In a recent interaction, Shruti shared a lesser-known anecdote about Kamal and how he learned Bengali purely out of admiration for actor Aparna Sen. The actor also named Rani Mukerji’s character Aparna in Hey Ram!

During a promotional interview with her Coolie co-star Sathyaraj, the senior actor praised Shruti for knowing many languages, much like her father. He also mentioned that Kamal Haasan did a Bengali film and even learned the language for it. However, Shruti clarified the myth and explained that Kamal learned Bengali not for a role but for Aparna Sen.

She revealed, “Do you know why he learnt Bengali? Because at that time, he was in love with Aparna Sen and to impress her, he learnt Bengali. He did not learn for films.” Shruti further shared another interesting anecdote, revealing how Kamal even named Rani Mukerji’s character, a Bengali woman and his love interest in his film Hey Ram, after Aparna Sen.

Earlier, in a conversation with Madan Gowri, Shruti Haasan had opened up about growing up in her father Kamal Haasan’s shadow and her struggle to carve her own identity. “People would constantly ask me about him, it was like all the time. I would feel like, I am Shruti, I want my own identity. People would point at me and say, ‘Hey, that’s Kamal’s daughter’. If anyone asked me, I would say, ‘No, my father is Dr Ramachandran’, it was our dentist’s name. ‘And I am Pooja Ramachandran’, a name I made up,” she recalled.

However, Shruti admitted that with time she has slowly adjusted to and accepted her father’s massive fame. “It’s difficult to separate from his fame when there are appa’s posters all over the place. Today, I don’t even want to imagine Shruti without Kamal Haasan,” she added.
