Bollywood actor Sharmila Tagore and legendary cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi aka Tiger Pataudi had a royal wedding in 1968. Their wedding and grand reception became a talking point in the tinsel town for days. Veteran star Sharmila recently appeared on The Kapil Sharma Show and threw light on her love story with the late cricketer. Sharmila and Pataudi were married for 43 years. The cricketer passed away in 2011.
When Kapil Sharma asked the Kashmir Ki Kali star if it was love at first sight for her with Tiger Pataudi, she denied it. Sharmila shared, “I was a Jaisimha (Indian cricketer) fan but somehow I met Nawab Pataudi. He just returned from England and it was difficult to understand what he spoke because of his British accent. His humour was different. Vo khud ke joke pe khud hi hanste the kyunki humein samajh hi nahi aata tha (He would laugh at his own jokes because we couldn’t understand them only) I think my children will kill me when they’ll hear this.”
Sharmila Tagore is a mother to actors Saif Ali Khan, Soha Ali Khan and designer Saba Pataudi.
The veteran star added that “it was not love at first sight” and it was only after some time that she realised that Tiger Pataudi would never “hurt me intentionally”. The basis of their relationship was trust.
During the episode, Sharmila Tagore also narrated how the cricketer proposed to her for marriage. She shared, “We were in Paris and it was Bastille Day when the entire city is on the roads to celebrate their independence. There, he went down on his knees, just like it happens in the movies, and asked me, “Will you marry me?” I was like, ‘Kya bol rahe ho? Sunaai nahi de raha (What are you saying, I can’t hear you) There was so much noise. Then he said it loudly and I said, ‘Yes yes I will’.”
Sharmila had earlier revealed that Mansoor announced their marriage even before proposing to her. According to a India Today report, she had said, “We went to meet Amma and there he announced that he and I have decided to marry. He didn’t tell me but he announced it there. He later proposed formally in Paris.”
Sharmila Tagore recently returned to the screen after a long gap in the Disney+ Hotstar film Gulmohar.
