Sharmila Tagore is regarded as the greatest actresses in the history of Indian cinema. However, along with being a leading actress, she was also a loving mother and wife, who loved to take care of her children and played a huge role in preserving, restoring and turning Pataudi into a pretty palace. However, the actress hasn’t put a single picture of hers in the palace.

In an old interview with Rediff, Saif Ali Khan shared, “My mother never throws away anything. She patches things up, fixes them, and they live on in another incarnation.” He added, “Marrying into a royal family, she’s played a huge part in preserving, restoring and turning Pataudi into arguably the prettiest little palace in India.”

“There’s not a single picture of hers in the palace — just one of her receiving the National Award in the corridor, tucked away under the bookcase — but her aura is everywhere.” He explained, “From the gardens to the blinds, she’s there in every little detail. So there is no need for pictures to stamp her presence.”

Praising his mother’s dedication to both her career and family, Saif Ali Khan said, “It’s rare for an actor to run a home as well as my mother has. She has all the graces of an excellent host. She’s like a finishing school, she trains her staff impeccably. And she would get really upset because the business family who lived opposite us would then double their salary and poach them away.”

In the same interview, Saif shared how the veteran actress makes special arrangements for her grandchildren when they visit her in Pataudi. He said, “When we are in Pataudi, she organises trampoline jumps for Taimur, gives him thoughtful presents which are a balance of fun and education.”

Previously speaking about her Pataudi Palace, Sharmila Tagore told Rediff, “My three children — Saif, Saba and Soha — have been located in Mumbai for a while now. But I don’t feel like leaving Tiger (her late husband Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the cricket legend) and the rest behind, so I stay there (in Delhi). Pataudi is quite close and I visit Mumbai occasionally, but I always go back.

She added, “All three of my children love Pataudi; they come to Delhi and head straight there. The house has a history, there are vibrant memories there. Like Suraj Sharma’s character Aditya in Gulmohar, my children also go through the albums there and remember. When they see their children playing around, they are reminded of their own childhood. It’s these memories that forges a connection between generations.”

The Pataudi Palace is Saif Ali Khan’s ancestral home located in the town of Pataudi in Gurgaon, Haryana. The royal palace covers 10 acres and is designed in the style of a colonial home.

Speaking to Cyrus Broacha on Homrun with Housing.com, Soha Ali Khan said while Saif owns the property, she got the generator room of the palace. She also mentioned that her mother Sharmila Tagore keeps tab on the maintenance expenses.

The palace spread in 10 acres has about 150 rooms and is worth Rs 800 crore, according to Housing.com. The palace, also known as Ibrahim Kothi, reportedly has seven bedrooms, seven dressing rooms, and seven billiard rooms. It also has shahi drawing and dining rooms.
