Singer and actor Saba Azad, who has been acclaimed for her work in both fields, has been dating Hrithik Roshan for several years. She recently opened up about her gradual realisation that her relationship was the reason why she wasn’t getting as many voiceover gigs as she used to. She said that she was mystified by this change, which occurred over the last couple of years, and decided to get to the bottom of it once and for all.
Saba shared that at one point, she would do 6-7 voiceovers in a month, but found that the offers were slowly drying up. She stated that this happened even though she never said she was quitting, or hiking her fees. Sharing multiple Instagram stories, Saba discussed how a reputed director once told her that he thought she would not be interested in voiceover jobs now that she is in a relationship with Hrithik. She wrote, “Well, you can imagine what was implied… He didn’t think I would do a job like a VO given where you are in life, ie who I am dating.” She also calls the director ‘super progressive, chill’ person.
Saba also discussed how people “assume” that a woman in a relationship with a “successful man” can no longer be interested in working. “Are we really still living in the dark ages where we assume a woman in a relationship with a successful partner no longer has to put food on her own table?? Or pay her rent and bills? Or take pride in her work and take care of herself and her family??? What kind of an archaic assumption to make!!!??,” she wrote.
Attributing her losing out on job opportunities because of people’s assumptions, she added, “So I basically lost a whole career that I absolutely loved and appreciated cause people thought I didn’t need to work anymore??? This is sadly a one dimensional patriarchal and regressive mindset.”
She concluded, “For the uninitiated, when two strong independent individuals come together they don’t give up their identities or this lives and careers to do so. They hold on to their individuality and share from a place of freedom and strength. Losing a whole career because of someone else’s presumptuous ignorance really hurts. So again, no I haven’t quit, all ye makers of ads- I still do VOs. So pls for the love of god undo your assumptions and let’s get recording already!!.”
Hrithik Roshan, who was earlier married to Sussanne Khan, started dating Saba a few years ago. The two often cheer for each other’s work on social media.
