Actor Prabhas’s recently released film Adipurush is the latest retelling of Ramayan for the big screen. Over the years, there have been several adaptations of the story through television and films, it is Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan on Doordarshan channel that is often seen as the benchmark. While the filmmaker passed away in 2005, he is still fondly remembered for his adaptation. Now, his son Prem Sagar has reacted to certain controversial dialogues in Om Raut’s film and he has expressed his displeasure about the same.
Prem is yet to watch Adipurush but in a recent interview with Hindustan Live, he said that while his father also took some creative liberties for his television show, he never “messed around with facts”.
When informed about a Hanuman’s dialogue in the film during the ‘Lanka Dahan’ scenewhere he can be heard saying, “Tel tere baap ka, kapra tere baap ka aur jalegi bhi tere baap ki“, Prem laughed and said, “Om Raut has tried to make a Marvel film. Papaji (Ramanand Sagar) did take some creative liberties while making Ramayana but he understood Lord Ram. He read various scriptures and then made a few changes but never messed around with facts.”
When informed that the makers have said that the film is made keeping in mind the sensibilities of today’s youth, Prem said, “Then they should show the film in Breach Candy or Colaba. Don’t show it worldwide. Don’t hurt people’s sentiments. Krittivasi and Eknath also made Ramayana but they never changed the content. They only changed the colour or language but here all the facts seemed to be changed.”
Prem also spoke about showing Raavan as a villain and asserted that the king of Lanka was a learned man and cannot be reduced to just a villain. He said that Raavan was a highly knowledgeable man and according to certain scriptures he did all this demolition because he knew that he will only get salvation through the hands of Lord Ram. “Many scriptures also say that Lord Ram himself considered Raavan as a great learned man… you cannot present Raavan as a deadly villain in the name of creative liberty,” he said.
Adipurush has been facing criticism for its dialogues and poor VFX. Many felt that dialogues, especially of Hanuman were colloquial in nature. The film’s writer Manoj Muntashir has defended the dialogues by saying that they were written keeping every fact and detail in mind.
In an interview with Republic world, Manoj said, “It is not an error. A very meticulous thought process that has gone into writing the dialogues for Bajrangbali. We have made it simple because we have to understand one thing (that) if there are multiple characters in a film, all of them can’t speak the language. There has to be a kind of diversion, a division.”
Adipurush starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan is in theatres.
