The Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea-starrer Raaz was released in the same year as Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Devdas, and in a recent interview, Dino claimed that his film was a bigger hit than Devdas in terms of profits. Raaz was directed by Vikram Bhatt, and produced by Mahesh Bhatt, and had a much smaller release than Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. Dino said that his film was a “big rage” but expressed disappointment that they did not win any awards.
In a chat with Pinkvilla, Dino said, “That film was a big rage. Devdas also released in the same year but if you look at the numbers, in terms of how much we spent on our film and how much we earned versus Devdas, ours was a bigger hit of that year.” Devdas was reportedly made on a budget of over Rs 40 crore and made around Rs 90 crore worldwide, as per Bollywood Hungama. Raaz reportedly collected Rs 31 crore, and was made on a budget of around Rs 5 crore.
Raaz was a horror film that also starred Bipasha Basu. In the same chat, Dino spoke about their break-up during the shoot and said, “During Raaz, we were breaking up, and to be honest, it was me who was breaking up with Bipasha because we had some issues. So she found it very tough and I was seeing her every day on the set. She was upset. It was very, very tough at that point for me to see someone I care about so much.” He added, “We had already chosen different paths, and though we tried to work things out, it just wasn’t happening. Eventually, I moved on.”
