Priyanka Chopra reflected on the stressful moment her daughter Malti Marie was born last year, and what it was like during the first few days when the newborn was allowed to go home after spending over 100 days in the NICU. In a new interview, Priyanka recalled her husband Nick Jonas’ reaction when Malti Marie was born.
On the Today Show, Priyanka said that from the moment Malti Marie took her first breath to now, she has always had either her or Nick by her side. Priyanka also recalled that she couldn’t sleep at all during the baby’s first few days at home, because she kept staring at her heartbeat on a monitor.
She said, “This is another example of the strength that my husband has. I kind of shut down. When we heard, I didn’t know how to react. I remember he just held me by my shoulders, and I said, ‘Just tell me what to do, because I don’t know what to do.’ And he’s like, ‘Just get into the car with me.’ And we drove to the hospital. She was born, and from the moment she took her first breath to now, she’s never been without one of us, ever.”
Priyanka said that the nurses in the NICU encouraged them to be hands-on with the baby in the NICU, and she said that she’d spend six-seven hours with her, before Nick would come and spend the next several hours with the baby. “She was in the hospital for about 110 days,” Priyanka said.
She continued, “It was not our test, it was her test. I realised very early that I didn’t have the luxury to be scared or weak, because she was scared, and she was weak…” Asked what it was like when they were able to bring the baby home, Priyanka said, “It was terrifying. Being a NICU parent, you really get used to the monitor. You know your child is alive because you can see their heartbeat. I couldn’t sleep for days, because now suddenly she was home without a monitor. I would keep my ear on her chest, check every few minutes to check if she’s okay. For weeks this went on, till I found a camera that could do it.”
Priyanka and Nick welcomed Malti Marie via surrogacy last year. Last month, the baby made her first trip to her motherland India, where Priyanka had work commitments towards her new show Citadel.
