Director Tushar Jalota’s maiden theatrical release, Param Sundari, a cross-cultural romance starring Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, saw a marginal spike in domestic box office earnings on its first Tuesday (day five) a day after witnessing a drastic fall on its first Monday (day four), following a decent opening weekend. On Tuesday, Param Sundari earned Rs 4.25 crore, a minor improvement on its Monday earnings of Rs 3.25 crore. Over its opening weekend, the film collected Rs 7.25 crore on its opening day, Rs 9.25 crore on Saturday (day two), and Rs 10.25 crore on Sunday (day three), the only day it managed to attain a double digit figure.
As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the current box office collection of Param Sundari in India stands at Rs 34.25 crore. In the process, it’s now surpassed Rosshan Andrrews’ cop thriller Deva, starring Shahid Kapoor, which earned Rs 33.97 crore in its lifetime domestic earnings earlier this year. Its next target is the re-release collection of Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru’s 2016 romantic drama Sanam Teri Kasam (Rs 35.55 crore), starring Harshvardhan Rane, followed by the Hindi dubbed version of S Shankar’s Telugu action thriller Game Changer (Rs 37.47 crore), starring Ram Charan and Kiara Advani, and Vishal Furia’s mythological horror film Maa (Rs 38.63 crore), starring Kajol.
Param Sundari is still trailing the last romantic comedy backed by its producer, Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, debutant director Karan Sharma’s Bhool Chuk Maaf. The Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi-starrer earned Rs 37.25 crore in the first five days at the domestic box office earlier this year.
Maddock Films has raised the benchmark at the domestic box office in the past couple of years with Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy Stree 2, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, last year; and Laxman Utekar’s historical war drama Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, earlier this year. Both films earned over Rs 600 crore in India.
While Param Sundari may not even earn a fraction of that, it may still have the potential to compete with the other rom-coms Maddock has produced over the years, including Bhool Chuk Maaf (Rs 75 crore), Imtiaz Ali’s 2009 directorial Love Aaj Kal (Rs 66.25 crore), starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, Homi Adajania’s Cocktail (Rs 71.24 crore), Utekar’s Luka Chuppi (Rs 94.09 crore), starring Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon, Imtiaz’s 2020 directorial Love Aaj Kal (Rs 39.76 crore), starring Kartik and Sara Ali Khan, Utekar’s Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (Rs 88.35 crore), starring Vicky and Sara, and Shahid and Kriti-starrer Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (Rs 85.16 crore) last year.
Param Sundari revolves around the blossoming romance between Sidharth’s Param, a Punjabi man from North India, and Janhvi’s Sundari, a half-Tamilian, half-Malayali girl from Kerala. Also starring Sanjay Kapoor, Param Sundari also seems to have benefitted from its soundtrack, particularly Sonu Nigam’s love anthem “Pardesiya”.
