Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who was last seen in the Jio Hotstar musical drama series Hai Junoon, recently appeared on SCREEN’s “Dear Me…” Season 2. While Neil spoke about his amazing childhood and working closely on film sets, he also recalled his days as a child actor. Opening up about his debut and film choices, he also shared his take on nepotism, noting that the ‘privilege’ of hailing from a film family has not helped him at all.

The actor shared, “I don’t endorse that word (nepotism) at all. A few might be privileged, yes. But there are many, including me, who have had to work their way up. I have had the privilege of being born and brought up in the film fraternity, but my struggle nullifies that word for me. It never helped me; I am still struggling to find my next job. It changes the perception, yes. But when it comes to work, nobody has, however, supported Mukesh ji or Nitin Mukesh ji or me in that front. Three generations had enough struggles. We’ve worked very hard all our lives to sustain our craft and put food on our table, and nothing else.”

“So I don’t agree with that. Besides, it is also about talent. If you have it, you will make it; and if you don’t, no matter how many times you make a film or give that actor an opportunity, he will not stand out or sustain. The current generation of stars… look at Shah Rukh Khan sir, isn’t he the benchmark? Isn’t he the idol of not just being the biggest superstar in the world, but also someone who we all look up to as an outsider who came and conquered? We all draw inspiration, even I do, from actors like Shah Rukh sir, or Kartik Aaryan, who hails not from a film family. He has such a simple and nice family. I love his relationship with his mother and father; it’s very refreshing to see that,” Neil further added.

He also shared how nepotism, as a term, is used as an excuse by many. The Johnny Gaddaar actor explained, “When we use this word, we are handicapping all young actors who don’t want to fight or don’t have the patience; we give them this one word as an excuse. I think that the word ‘nepotism’ is used mainly as an excuse for those who don’t have it in them, or the patience to struggle and fight for their conviction towards their craft. It’s a big handicap; otherwise, today the conversations are that ‘he got a chance, he is a lucky man’, or ‘his father or family does this’, but what are you doing? By thinking like this, you won’t grow. You need to remove this and think about how you can make your name. Manoj Bajpayee, Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Jaideep Ahlawat, Pankaj Tripathi — they are such brilliant actors, my favorites, they never came through nepotism.”

Neil Nitin Mukesh is the grandson of singer Mukesh and son of playback singer Nitin Mukesh. He made his acting debut as a child actor in Vijay in 1988, where he played the role of young Rishi Kapoor. His full-fledged acting debut happened in 2007 with Johnny Gaddar.
