Monica Bedi made her debut in Hindi movies back in 1995 in a film titled Surakshaa which also starred Saif Ali Khan, but since Monica did not grow up in India, she had no idea about the actor’s family and often wondered why people would address him as ‘nawab saab’. In a recent interview, Monica recalled that she wondered why people would call him ‘nawab’ as she thought this was a name often used sarcastically to address those throwing tantrums.
“It was my first film with Saif Ali Khan but I was so naïve that I didn’t know about his family. Like I knew that he is Sharmila Tagore’s son because I knew about her from the film I had seen,” she recalled in a chat with Siddharth Kannan. She continued, “When we used to shoot and ADs would call us for the shoot, I heard people used to call him ‘nawab saab’. I thought we say ‘nawab’ in jest like ‘khud ko bade nawab samajhte hain (they think too highly of themselves) if someone is throwing a tantrum. I am sure people say such things behind your back on set.”
Monica wondered that Saif was a nice person and why would anyone call him ‘nawab’ as she associated this address with someone who would throw tantrums. Until one day, someone called Saif by this name to his face and Monica was sitting right next to him. “Then I asked him, ‘Saif, why do they call you nawab? He said ‘Because I am nawab’ and then he told me about his family. Then I thought about myself ‘how dumb’.”
Monica appeared in a few Hindi films like Jodi No 1 and Tirchhi Topiwale in the next few years. She was arrested with Abu Salem in Portugal and extradited to India in 2005. She then served a prison sentence until 2007 and got bail.
