Despite promotional blitzkrieg and its talented cast and crew, Mirzya opened shockingly weak at the box office on Friday. Starring Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher as star-crossed lovers, the film has been directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and written by Gulzar.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Mirzya has a SHOCKINGLY LOW start… Records DISMAL figures on Day 1… Fri ₹ 2.20 cr. India biz.” The signs were all there on Friday, with theatres staying largely empty. Adarsh had earlier written, “#Mirzya morning-afternoon trends very weak… Needs a miraculous jump in evening + night shows and also on Sat + Sun to leave a mark at BO.” The epic fantasy romance saw practically empty theatres in morning shows and saw only 20-25 percent occupancy during the day.
Based on the epic love story of Mirza Sahiban told in today’s time, Mirzya marked the launch of Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan. The film was also premiered at BFI London Festival on Thursday.

Celebs who saw earlier shows of the film also praised it on social media, building a lot of buzz around the movie. However, on Friday, the film opened to mixed reviews.
Its competitor, Tutak Tutak Tutiya didn’t fair any better. A horror comedy, the film stars Prabhu Deva, Tamannah Bhatia and Sonu Sood. The film again saw a poor response with its first day collections to be around Rs 1 crore. The film saw 15-20 percent occupancy in morning.

Mirzya and Sonu Sood’s production Tutak Tutak Tutiya are likely to fare well at the theatres in North India, but they may not do the same in the southern parts of the country.
