Jolly LLB 3: Akshay Kumar boasts of ‘organic’ weekend collection of Rs 53.5 crore months after his film Sky Force was accused of inflating numbers

Previously, trade analyst Komal Nahta had accused the makers of Sky Force of block booking of tickets and using refund tactics to inflate box office numbers.

Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi’s much-anticipated courtroom drama Jolly LLB 3 has had a strong start at the box office. The film opened at Rs 12.5 crore on its release day and witnessed a significant surge over the weekend, collecting Rs 20 crore on Saturday and Rs 21 crore on Sunday, respectively. The film’s Sunday collection saw an improvement despite coinciding with an India-Pakistan match. With a total first weekend collection of Rs 53.5 crore, the makers are celebrating the film’s success on social media.

Shibashish Sarkar, Group CEO of Reliance Studio, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a statement praising the film’s ‘organic’ success. He wrote: “It’s a clean hit. No buying of tickets, no false reporting of numbers, no buying of reviews… no unfair practices… just pure audience love.” He also congratulated the cast and crew for the achievement.

Actor Akshay Kumar acknowledged the statement, quote-tweeting Sarkar’s post and adding: “Nothing matters more than the audience’s love. A big thank you to everyone who supported us.”

When Sky Force was accused of inflating numbers through unfair practices

Jolly LLB 3 marks Akshay Kumar’s fifth release of the year. However, the actor’s earlier film Sky Force drew criticism after being accused of block-booking seats to inflate its box office numbers. Trade analyst Komal Nahta had alleged that the film’s Rs 62 crore opening weekend may have been artificially boosted through such tactics.

In one of his videos, Komal Nahta claimed that for writers, actors and directors, perception plays a huge role. “They think it is okay to fool people to create a perception for themselves.” He added: “Sky Force used two ways to inflate its box office numbers. The first one was that if you book a ticket on BookMyShow, it will give you a refund of Rs 250. While an individual pays just Rs 50 for ticket, it is registered as Rs 300 at box office.”

“Secondly, they ring theaters, ask them the number of tickets sold and they buy rest of the seats. They show appears housefull on online apps and offline. However, in reality, more than half of the theater stays empty. They do this to show that they earned Rs 80 crore on record, whereas in reality, the film earns just Rs 30 or Rs 40 crore. This helps them create a perception and attract footfall.”

Nahta also made similar claims about the film Chhaava, accusing its makers of using the same strategy.

In response, the director of Sky Force denied these allegations in an interview with News18, stating: “As for Chhaava or Sky Force, our collections are genuinely organic, and there have been no block bookings. This is the audience’s love. It has been nearly 20 days since the film’s release, and I still receive messages daily on Instagram and Twitter from viewers who have loved the film.”

Both Chhaava and Sky Force were produced by Maddock Films—the production house behind hits like Stree franchise and Munjya.

While Jolly LLB 3 has had a promising start, its true box office strength will be tested in the weekdays, especially Monday.
