It’s a clash only on paper, as Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s horror comedy Stree 2 is leading the box office face-off with Akshay Kumra’s comedy, Khel Khel Mein, and John Abraham’s actioner, Vedaa. The advance booking report for day one has set the tone for what is to come on August 15, when the three films arrive in cinemas.
Stree 2 is winning the race with one of the best advance bookings all time. The Dinesh Vijan-backed horror comedy has sold 3,77,380 tickets, as reported by Sacnilk. The gross collection of the sales so far is Rs 11.23 cr. This is more than 10 times the combined gross collections of Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein.
Nikkhil Adavani’s Vedaa, with 3611 shows (includ9ing Hindi and Tamil), has so far sold 23,150 tickets, amounting to a gross of Rs 55.91 lakh. While Khel Khel Mein, which also co-stars Taapsee Pannu, has managed to sell only 14,469 tickets across 2705 shows. The gross collection stands at Rs 53.75 lakh.
With one more day to go, the fight for the best showcasing is heating up behind the doors, with Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein essentially battling it out among themselves, while Stree 2 is operating like a solo release.
The showcasing for Stree 2 is taking a hit, as it will have to settle for 60-70 percent shows in a multiplex, with the rest being divided between Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein.
Stree 2 is also chasing records in the national multiplex chains, recording excellent advance bookings. The film, which will have limited paid previews on August 14 starting 9 PM, has sold over 2,50,000 tickets (including previews). In national chains, it has already gone past ahead of Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki, which had sold over 2,30,000 tickets, as well as Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter (1,45,000 tickets) and Kalki 2898 AD Hindi (1,25,000 tickets).
In the national chains, Stree 2 will now target the other biggies, including Brahmastra (3,02,000 tickets) and Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 (3,08,000 tickets) to sell over an estimated 3,50,000 tickets. If it manages to do that, Stree 2 will lodge itself in the list of the top five advance bookings of all time for Hindi films, with films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (5,57,00), Pathaan (5,56,000) and Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, which had sold over 4,56,000 tickets.
Stree 2 is expected to take an opening of Rs 40 cr, which can increase if the word of mouth of the film is positive. Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa are expected to open in the range of Rs 6-7 cr.
