‘If Shah Rukh Khan brought work home…’: When Gauri Khan threatened to ‘break’ TV, throw script out of window

In an old interview, Gauri Khan called acting the "worst profession" in the world and said that no offer "would be big enough to tempt" her to do films.

Being the wife of Bollywood’s ‘Badshah’ Shah Rukh Khan, who has a sea of fans outside his house almost every day and female fans waiting to catch a glimpse of him, is not easy. But Gauri Khan has been acing it for the past 32 years, since their marriage on October 25, 1991. Though, with some house rules, which Shah Rukh dare not mess with.

Just a couple of years after her marriage to Shah Rukh, Gauri, in an interview with Filmfare, made it loud and clear that Shah Rukh is into films and she is not. She even called acting the “worst profession” in the world and said that no offer “would be big enough to tempt” her to do films.

Also, she had laid some house rules for her husband when he returned home from work. Gauri had said in the 1994 interview, “We never discuss his work at home. If Shah Rukh ever sits down to watch a Hindi movie video, I think I’ll break the TV. If he brings a script home, it’ll go straight out of the window. He has enough time for all that on the sets.”

The rule was probably followed to the T because film producers visited Shah Rukh at home only when Gauri was not in. However, she was fine with them coming over after the actor moved his office to the front side of their home. “Guess we’ll have them coming over more often once Shah Rukh gets his office going in the front room,” she said.

Gauri moved to Mumbai after marrying Shah Rukh. Initially, it was hard for her to adjust in a new city. “I hated Bombay. I missed my family. I hardly knew anyone here,” she shared, while adding that it got better eventually and she started to have ‘fun’ in the city. She avoided ‘socialising’ with the producers and directors Shah Rukh was working with but had her own set of friends with whom she went partying.

“We have our own group of friends — like Dianne and Chikki (Chunky Panday’s brother). We generally hang around them. I don’t even know what films Shah Rukh is working on,” added Gauri.
