Actor Huma Qureshi made a successful debut in Bollywood with Anurag Kashyap’s gangster drama, Gangs Of Wasseypur. While the film served as a good launchpad for the actor, initially, she was unaware of how it would change her life. Huma recently shared that since she only had a 20-minute role in both parts of the film combined, she didn’t realise she was the “heroine” of the film.
In Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2, the actor played the role of Mohsina, wife of Faizal Khan (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui). In an interview with Pinkvilla, Huma recalled shooting for the film and how she promoted it with the rest of the team.
“I am actually there for 20 minutes in Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2 combined…When people say ‘How could you not know’, I tell them that it’s a six-hour long extravaganza for two parts and I am there for 20 minutes. How was I supposed to know that it was supposed to catapult me and people would recognise me?” Huma said.
Adding to this, the actor shared her reaction upon seeing herself on the hoarding of the film and an important piece of advice that co-star Manoj Bajpayee gave her.
“I remember I wasn’t paid much for that film.. so when I saw my hoarding of Part 1 and Part 2, I was like, ‘I am the heroine of this film?’ It’s special because I feel we made that film with so much honesty and so much innocence. When we were promoting the film, Manoj Bajpayee told me, ‘Remember this feeling. Your first film and the butterflies you have and when you are going from studio to studio promoting, you will never get this again. Because after a point when you become a seasoned actor, it will become like a chore’,” said the actor, who eventually did more films such as Ek Thi Daayan, Dedh Ishqiya and Jolly LLB2.
Huma, who hails from New Delhi, distinctly remembers the first time a journalist visited her home in the capital for an interview.
Sharing the interesting anecdote, the actor said that it was a very confusing space for her and her family because a journalist had never visited their home before.
“I remember a journalist from a publication came to my house in Delhi for an interview and it was the first time a journo had come. Ab humara middle class ghar, samajh nahi aa raha ki chai pilaye, kya kare, lunch serve kare..(Ours was a middle-class house, we couldn’t understand what to do. Should we offer tea or lunch) and you don’t know what the thing is and my mother was just coming in and going out. I was like ‘Mom let me just finish this’ and my mother was like, ‘Why do they want to talk to you, you know nothing’,” Huma Qureshi shared.
The actor was recently seen in Tarla, the biopic of renowned chef Tarla Dalal. The film had a direct OTT release and was directed by Piyush Gupta.
