Hrithik Roshan’s girlfriend, Saba Azad, opened up about the sudden attention that came her way when they started dating, and admitted that she found it overwhelming. For advice, she turned to her former partner, Imaad Shah, since he had experience in the matter. Imaad is the son of Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, and had an understanding of what it’s like to be in the public eye. He said that Saba needed the help, as she had no idea how intense the scrutiny could become. In a joint interview, the former partners and creative collaborators spoke about how their relationship has evolved over the years, especially after they stopped dating.

Chatting with The Hollywood Reporter India, Saba was asked if their friendship changed at all with Saba’s growing public profile, and she said, “Why would our friendship change? Apart from the fact that I would turn to him and Sana, his partner, about how to deal with it… Outside of that, no.” Imaad chipped in, “She did need someone to talk to, and she often needed perspective… Anyone would. Having somebody who has experienced that (level of fame) in smaller degrees and having a healthy remove from it is probably what she needed.”

Saba said that Imaad has ‘dealt with that his whole life, and has been in the public eye his whole life’. “He has a perspective that I don’t… It was overwhelming, to say the least. I’m not used to those many eyes on me, and nor did I invite them. It really helps to have friends who get you,” she said. Imaad added that he is a little removed from the world of Bollywood, and that he would often not be aware when a video of Saba was ‘blowing up on the internet’ and she was ‘freaking out about it’.

Saba said that people have a misconception about celebrities and the lifestyles they lead. “I have a lot of sense of normalcy around me, even within my relationship,” she said, referring to her life with Hrithik. “It’s an assumption that we make that people who are in the public eye don’t lead normal lives. Everyone is just going about their life, trying to get through from one day to another,” she said, noting that Hrithik ‘has been in the public eye’ longer than she has, and was therefore more accustomed to it. “I’m surrounded by friends who couldn’t give a damn about fame,” she said.

Saba said that her life continues to be quite normal, and that it is easy to ‘slip through the cracks’ and remain out of the limelight unless you’re actively chasing it. Saba was last seen in the Prime Video film Songs of Paradise; she also played a supporting role in the SonyLIV series Rocket Boys, and continues to perform with Imaad. She will soon be seen in Anurag Kashyap’s Bandar, which had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
