Esha Deol and Bharat Takhtani recently announced their ‘amicable’ separation after 11 years of marriage. The couple, who first met as teenagers, got married in 2012 and share two daughters. Esha, in many interviews, had shared that she first met Bharat when they were both in school. They started dating in their 20s. In an interview shortly after their wedding, Bharat had shared that they are both possessive, and added that he has to be “guarded” when he is spending time with his old friends.
In a chat with Filmfare in 2013, Bharat shared, “I don’t like arguments, while she has the habit of repeating things. But I’m the first to make-up, I don’t have an ego.” When asked about being possessive, he said, “I’m possessive, but not as much as she is. Pakad kar rakhti hai mujhe (She likes to keep me in control). I’ve got to be guarded even when I am with my old friends.” Esha, who was also a part of the interview, said with a laugh, “Aankh nikal doongi (I’ll gouge your eyes out).”
In the same interview, Esha had discussed that Bharat did not want her to put on weight. “Bharat doesn’t want me to put on weight. We’ll soon be joining ashtanga yoga classes,” she said. Bharat described Esha as “gharelu (homely)” even though she “liked to believe she was the boy of the house.” He shared that Esha did not even know how to make tea when they got married, but learnt to prepare Khow Suey because she was “aware of what keeps (him) happy.”
“She takes care of my mother, her moods, she’s gelled so well. Actually, Esha’s always been ‘gharelu’, though she liked to believe she was the boy of the house. She’s caring and responsible. She’s aware of what keeps me happy. I’m a foodie, I live to eat. And she sees to it that my favourite dishes are prepared at home. In fact, for someone who didn’t know how to make chai, just the other day, she cooked Khow Suey,” he said.
Bharat and Esha announced their separation on Tuesday in a statement to Delhi Times that read, “We have mutually and amicably decided to part ways. Through this shift in our lives, the best interests and welfare of our two children is and will be of utmost importance to us. We’d appreciate our privacy is respected.”
Esha is the daughter of Hema Malini and Dharmendra.
