Emergency box office collection day 1: Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, which has now been finally released, three years after it was first announced, has opened to Rs 2.4 crore India nett, according to early estimates by Sacnilk. The film, which features Kangana in the role of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, had about 2500 shows across India. It was released against Azaad, featuring Ajay Devgn’s nephew Amaan Devgan and Raveena Tandon’s daughter, Rasha Thadani.
Emergency recorded an overall occupancy of about 19.26% on its first day, with about 467 shows in Mumbai and 657 shows in the National Capital Region. Emergency is among the lowest openers of her career, after Thalaivii (2021), which opened at Rs 1.46 crore; Dhaakad, which reportedly earned Rs 50 lakh on day one; and Tejas which opened at Rs 1.25 crore. The last few years haven’t been successful for the actor, who repeatedly describes herself as the highest-grossing female star of the industry.
Her 2015 film Katti Batti, also starring Imran Khan, had opened at Rs 5.3 crore, whereas her 2017 film Rangoon earned Rs 5.1 crore on its first day. Her film Simran, which was also a commercial failure, had opened to Rs 2.77 crore. It was followed by Manikarnika (2019), which earned Rs 8.75 crore.
Kangana has been awaiting a hit since since her 2015 release Tanu Weds Manu Returns which earned Rs 258 crore worldwide against a budget of Rs 39 crore. Emergency also marks her solo directorial debut. The political drama also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Chaudhary in pivotal roles. The film is also among the last appearances of late actor Satish Kaushik.
Meanwhile, Azaad, directed by Abhishek Kapoor has opened at Rs 1.5 crore with around 2200 shows across India. The film witnessed an occupancy of 15.02%.
