Almost a quarter-century after it was made, director Anurag Kashyap’s debut film Paanch is finally set to see the light of day, with the movie gearing up for a theatrical release — which it never got in the early 2000s due to a host of issues, including objections from the statutory film-certification body. One of the film’s co-producers recently announced the long-awaited release, much to the excitement of Kashyap’s fans.

Starring Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastava, Vijay Maurya, Joy Fernandes, and Tejaswini Kolhapure in key roles, Paanch is loosely based on the 1976–77 Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders in Pune. The film, however, ran into trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over its depictions of drug abuse, violence and foul language. While it eventually received approval from the CBFC, production-related issues prevented its release afterwards.

Now, producer Tutu Sharma now confirmed that efforts are underway to release the movie next year. Having recently ventured into film exhibition through the cinema chain Citara, Sharma told Bollywood Hungama, “Paanch is definitely coming next year. I plan to release it in cinemas within six months. The film was banned and the negatives have slightly deteriorated. The process of restoring them has already started. As soon as it’s ready, we’ll release Paanch.”

Referring to the earlier conflicts with the CBFC, Sharma noted, “The issues were resolved. But then we faced some more challenges and hence, the film was lying in the cans. Also, the trend of re-runs is here now. So, one can imagine the potential of Paanch. That’s a very encouraging sign. Also, the times are such that such films are being watched and they have an audience.”

During the chat, Tutu Sharma also praised the actors’ standout performances, saying, “Not just Kay Kay Menon but even Tejaswini Kolhapure is brilliant in the film. According to me, it is Anurag Kashyap’s best film to date. Many people believe that. You’ll agree with me once you see it.” The movie boasts cinematography by Natarajan Subramaniam, editing by Kashyap’s then-wife and frequent collaborator Aarti Bajaj and music composed by Vishal Bhardwaj.
