Filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap, who has had his knives out against Salman Khan, said that the star is trying to appease his brother, Anurag Kashyap, in a public effort to show that he’s interested in making amends. Abhinav has been a vocal critic of Salman, accusing him of misbehaviour during their time on the hit film Dabangg. Abhinav called Salman a ‘goon’ in a recent interview with SCREEN, which he referenced in a new interview with Bollywood Thikana. Salman recently showed his support to Anurag’s new film, Nishaanchi, even though he had a falling out with Anurag over two decades ago, and while Abhinav’s new comments were making headlines.
Asked why Salman is supporting his brother even as he continues to attack the star, Abhinav said, “It is written in Salman Khan’s destiny that he will lick our boots. I think it has something to do with the interview I gave (to SCREEN). The public is raising questions, so he’s trying to show that he’s our supporter. He misbehaved with the same Anurag Kashyap during Tere Naam. Anurag quit that film, he wasn’t fired. Now he’s praising Anurag. Wait and watch… Perhaps they’re trying to get me to shut up via my brother. Maybe the think Anurag will talk to me and tell me not to speak. That’s why he’s praising my brother’s film and doing his ‘chamchagiri’. This is how talentless people get ahead in life.”
Citing the example of the late Amjad Khan, Abhinav said that the Sholay actor never worked with Salim Khan, Salman’s father, again because he heard that the writer was gossiping about him and not being supportive behind his back. It was said that after initially championing the actor for the role of Sholay’s now-iconic villain, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar had doubts about his performance, and particularly his unusual voice. They were said to have suggested having him dubbed over. This deeply hurt Amjad, who vowed to never work with the writers again. After his passing, Salim Khan made amends with his son, Shadab Khan.
It was in an interview with Samdish Bhatia that Anurag spoke about his Tere Naam experience, and revealed that he had to step away from the film because he wanted Salman to grow his chest hair. “I was not asked to leave Tere Naam, the film ghosted on me,” Anurag told Bollywood Bubble. Anurag recalled, “I asked Salman a certain thing, after that nobody got back to me. I didn’t not even know when the film started shooting, and what happened.”
He continued, “I was very involved, scripting was done. We were about to start the shoot.” Recalling the point of the conflict, he shared, “I just asked Salman to grow chest hair and he also didn’t say anything. It was the producer who reacted.” Directed by Satish Kaushik, Tere Naam was released in 2003. But Anurag said he never met Salman again. “I’ve never met him since then. I have come across him once or twice and said ‘hello’,” he said.
