Actress Ananya Pandayhas been garnering praise for her performance in the Amazon Prime Video show Call Me Bae. Recently, Ananya spoke to Indianexpress.com about her character in the show and also about facing judgments as a celebrity. The actress also shared her take on whether women are empowered today.
In Call Me Bae, Ananya’s character Bella/Bae faces certain kinds of judgments at every step. When Ananya was asked if she has been in a similar situation in real life where there has been underestimation at every turn, the actress said, “There is judgment and people say all kinds of things to all sorts of people. But I have realized over time to not pay heed to that because people will say whatever, no matter what you do, how you do it, they will find something negative to say at the end of the day. So I think it is about doing good work and focusing on that.”

At the show’s trailer launch, Ananya Panday was asked how important was it for her to make sure that her character did not come across as a bimbet. She said, “The first step for me was not to think of Bae as that. She has her vulnerabilities and flaws, so both Colin and I not judging her was important. As an actor, it was important for me to be fully convinced by what Bae was saying even though it might seem ridiculous to everyone around. I couldn’t make fun of her. I had to deeply believe what she was saying and I feel like on the surface Bae might look like something else, but when you get to know her, automatically that perception will be shaken off.”
Talking about feeling empowered as a woman in this day and age, especially with all the atrocities happening around, Ananya Panday shared, “There is no black or white when it comes to feeling empowered. Things have gotten better in our industry. The guidelines, the safety protocols are put in place. The power of choice that female actors have now, the sheer number of women on a set, in that way, there is a lot of progress. But then there is also the flipside where it seems almost regressive. So I don’t think we can put it into the black and white box.”
Lastly, Ananya Panday spoke about beauty standards in the film industry. She said, “Beauty is very subjective. For me, it is so much beyond how someone looks. It is about how they can affect me as a person. So, I feel beauty standards will always exist, but I don’t think it is just physical beauty.”
