Music composer-singer Amaal Mallik has listed reasons why his film work has reduced over the years. Shortly after coming out in support of actor Priyanka Chopra, who said she faced opposition in the Hindi film industry as people stopped casting her in movies, Amaal, in a series of tweets, highlighted the roadblocks for his regular film work.

The musician, in a Twitter thread, wrote that his young fans have been worried over his diminishing Bollywood work and he owed it to them to give a “clear picture.” Amaal said the reasons are wide ranging, from not agreeing to do remixes, less pay, to refusing to be a yes-man and be powerful people’s “puppets”.

“My music has worked irrespective of the stars in them, but last few years seeing me do less film work has made young fans of mine a little worried, hence I’m giving them the clear picture. (A) I refuse most remixes. (B) I refuse to suck up to power mad people. (C) Can’t take instructions from non-musical people about music. (D) Can’t do the sweet talking all the time.

“(E) Can’t work without the right remuneration. (F) Not part of any producer director camp 😉 (G) I’m usually replaced by the composers that ‘LISTEN’ and say ‘Ji Sir’ all the time. (H) I can’t butter people & do the constant a** licking they have to in order to become their little pets/ puppets to get one song here and there. Do I really want to make music for such people? Really? Nahi Yaar,” his Twitter thread read.

When a user pointed out that the composer, elder son of composer Daboo Malik, made it big early in life with a dream launch in a Salman Khan film, something not all debutants manage to get, Amaal recognised his privilege but added that the only “advantage” he had was to have an overview of the industry and know how “dirty yet amazing this place could be”.

“Salman Khan sir heard my music randomly go check my interviews about this…Yes my father worked for the movies with the khan family and I owe my debut to him. But I failed in #JaiHo and had to face the same struggles a new comer would face. No work for a year or more. You need to see my previous interviews to know the truth brother you aren’t wrong but you aren’t completely right. The only advantage I had is I knew how dirty yet amazing this place could be,” he added.

In another tweet, where he had mentioned that much like Priyanka, who felt “cornered” in Bollywood, he also faces the same “on a daily basis”, Amaal wrote, “Then people think I am a nepo-kid and I have it easy.”

Speaking with Dax Shepherd on his podcast Armchair Expert, Priyanka Chopra had shared that she was being “cornered” in Bollywood and also had some “beef” with people in the industry. It was at that time that her manager Anjula Acharia came to her rescue. Acharia saw her in a music video and called her to ask if she would be interested in building a career in music in the US.

“I was being pushed into a corner in the industry (Bollywood). I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break. This music thing gave me an opportunity to go into another part of the world, not crave for the movies I didn’t want to get but I would require to schmooze certain clubs and cliques of people. It would require groveling and I had worked a long time by then that I didn’t feel like I wanted to do it,” Priyanka had said in the interview.

Several people from the industry also came out in support of Priyanka, including actor Kangana Ranaut, editor-writer Apurva Asrani and filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri.
