Once a powerhouse figure who dominated the box office with a string of superhits, actor Akshay Kumar is currently experiencing a rough patch, with many of his recent films falling flat at the box office. This year alone, two of his movies — Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Sarfira — ended up being major flops, leading to significant losses for their makers.

One of the outsiders who made it big in Bollywood, Akshay has also starred in several films that address socially relevant issues. His repertoire includes films tackling topics such as the elimination of open defecation in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), the need for affordable sanitary pads for rural women in Pad Man (2018) and the significance of sex education in OMG 2 (2023). He has also appeared in projects based on real-life incidents, such as Airlift (2016), Rustom (2016), Mission Mangal (2019) and Mission Raniganj (2023).

Recently, Akshay Kumar opened up about his choice of films and noted that many of his industry peers and friends have questioned his film choices. He explained that his upcoming film Khel Khel Mein also deals with a relevant societal issue, but approaches it through comedy. In an interview with India Today, Akshay shared, “Somethings (films and the subjects they discuss) look so good and lovely that your heart would want to do it. Many people in the industry, including my friends and (movie) critics, have asked ‘Why do you have to make films on sanitary pads and toilets.’ When I made a movie on sex education, a lot of people opposed me, ‘sex’s a bad thing to talk about.’ But I like to do such movies and will keep on doing them if given the opportunity.”

Now, Akshay is set to return to the silver screen with director Mudassar Aziz’s multi-starrer comedy drama Khel Khel Mein, which also features Taapsee Pannu, Ammy Virk, Vaani Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Aditya Seal, and Pragya Jaiswal in key roles. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on August 15.
