Actor Sunny Leone, mother to adopted daughter Nisha and twin boys Noah and Asher born via surrogacy, recently opened up about her challenging journey to parenthood. Speaking on a podcast with actor Soha Ali Khan, Sunny discussed her experiences with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy. During the conversation, Soha also shared her own pregnancy journey, revealing that she faced a long wait before conceiving her first child, daughter Inaaya, with husband Kunal Khemu.
Soha kicked off the podcast All About Her by getting candid about her first pregnancy. “Kunal and I never really prioritised having children. I was 35 when we got married and I was aware of the biological clock, but we didn’t take it very seriously. But by the time I became 38, I knew that if we wanted to become parents, we had to be intentional,” she shared.
Soha Ali Khan also reflected on the options now available to aspiring parents. “We are living in a time where science, medicine, and empathy have come together to offer more choices and more hope than ever before. IVF, surrogacy, adoption, these are not just alternatives today, they are empowering options that have allowed so many people to experience the joy of parenthood in their own way.”
When Soha asked about Sunny Leone’s choice to conceive a baby through surrogacy and IVF, the Jism 2 actor replied, “There wasn’t really a plan, but the original plan was having one through surrogacy and then in a few years, we wanted to follow our careers. At that moment, it wasn’t good timing, but it was good timing in our hearts. It was good timing to share our life with somebody, just not physically coming through me.”
She continued, “So, we thought of looking into it and trying it. We harvested my eggs and we made these six beautiful embryos out of them.”
Sunny Leone and her husband, Daniel Weber, not only had their embryos frozen but also applied for adoption at the same time. “We had four girls and two boys. We always thought about having a girl first. That didn’t work out, four girls went. Then, we switched doctors, and the two embryos that are two boys are with me. In that time, we had also applied for adoption because the process of going through IVF and surrogacy is disheartening when things don’t go your way. It can also become a very lengthy process. I got to know within a week that four of them aren’t going to survive,” she revealed.
Sunny added, “Danielle and I were there for each other for emotional support. We didn’t tell anybody. We wanted to figure this out on our own first. He is pretty supportive and we had the same feelings towards having a child.”
The couple was quite disappointed and upset when their surrogate woman didn’t conceive a baby the very first time through IVF. “Our surrogate had high HCG levels, but the sack was empty. The problem with IVF is that the second that embryo goes in, you are pregnant psychologically. You are planning a baby room, and so many different things go through your mind. Then all of a sudden, it’s not there, the sack is empty. This happened twice with the same doctor. He wasn’t very nice, so we decided to switch,” she said.
Sunny Leone and Daniel Weber tied the knot in 2011. On the other hand, Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Khemu got married in January 2015 and welcomed their daughter Inaaya Khemu in 2017.
