Abhay Deol, the nephew of veteran actor Dharmendra and cousin of Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, has often opened up about his family dynamics. On SCREEN’s The Suvir Saran Show, the actor spoke about his not-so-normal childhood because he belongs to a film family. Abhay also revealed that he calls his parents ‘Bollywood hillbillies’ as they came to the city from a village. Abhay is the nephew of veteran actor Dharmendra and the son of Ajit Deol.
When asked if his mother ever expressed her difficulties while shifting base, he replied, “I never really asked her how difficult it may have been to shift. As I am older, I do talk to her now and try to address the issues that I see she has. I try and tell her how it was tough in different ways for her. She won’t express too much, so I try and express it for her to that I can piece everything together. She is much older now, so it’s hard to change a person’s pattern and thoughts at this age. She has been to my Goa house, it took her a little bit to adjust.”
Abhay revealed that they are quite down to earth and attached to their origin. “They are very rooted and proud of the community where they come from. We grew up in the city, so there was a bit of a disconnect in that sense. I speak to my parents in Hindi, and to my sisters and brothers in English,” he added.
The actor also recalled his childhood memories, when he had to take permission to go out with his friends. “As normal as they tried to make our childhood, we were not in a normal situation. I used to meet my friends, whenever I could go see them, I would. We weren’t allowed to go out all the time, the celebrity status did have an impact. There was a more sense of being protected and sheltered than the average kid,” he said.
On the work front, Abhay Deol has a few upcoming projects this year, including, Bun Tikki and Son Of Sardar 2.
