Actor Aamir Khan, who has been actively working in the film industry for nearly four decades, had privately decided to quit the business during the pandemic. However, his family convinced him to reconsider his decision. In 2022, after the failure of Laal Singh Chadha, the actor announced a break from acting to spend more time with his family, after having realised that he’d neglected them for years. When Aamir returned from his break, he immediately took up six projects, which is a first in his career. In a recent interview, the actor revealed the reason behind it.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir said, “I have never taken up six movies together in my life. This time, I had my own reason for it. When I finally decided that, ‘Okay, I won’t leave films yet’, the next thought came to me that this is probably the last 10 years of my active working life.” When his ex-wife, Kiran Rao, who was also a part of the interview, refused to accept that he is in the twilight of his career, giving the example of the 97-year-old actor Clint Eastwood, Aamir said, “You guys are giving an extreme example. He is one of the rare people who is in his 90s is still thinking straight.”
He added, “You can’t trust life, we might die tomorrow. So, I am saying, I roughly have 10 years of active life. I am 59. Till I am 70, I will hopefully be well enough to be productive. So, then I thought, let me make my last 10 years the most productive. More than that, as I am getting older, I want to support talent which I believe in–writers, directors, all creative people. I want to become a platform for talents I believe in before I retire at 70. That’s why I took up more films.”
In the same interview, Aamir Khan also expressed his desire to experience a retired life. Recalling the time when the actor almost announced his retirement to his family, Kiran Rao said, “Can you imagine him sitting around and not doing any movies and doing nothing? His daughter told him, ‘Please papa, you can’t spend all your time with us, we will go crazy’.” Aamir Khan then quipped, “I would love a retired life. Reading books, doing Yoga.”
Aamir Khan made his comeback as a producer with Laapataa Ladies, which is India’s official entry for Oscars 2025. He wants to back more such films in the future. To make his vision possible on a larger scale, the actor even hired Aparna Purohit as the CEO of Aamir Khan Productions.
He said, “I can’t do large scale all by myself. If I want to support talent on a large scale, I will need somebody to take care of it while I am busy with other projects.”
