For years, Aamir Khan has expressed his desire to adapt the Mahabharata for the big screen, but he was apprehensive about taking on such a huge responsibility. But it seems like he is finally ready. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir confirmed that he’s now gearing up to bring Mahabharata to the big screen — and work is set to begin this year. “It is one of my biggest ambitions,” he said, adding, “It will take a while because the writing process will take a few years.”

Though tight-lipped about whether he will act in the series himself, Aamir clarified that his current focus is on producing the epic. Casting decisions, he said, would be based entirely on who is “most appropriate” for the parts.

The ambitious scale of the project, he said, may require multiple directors. Aamir revealed that he’s considering a Lord of the Rings-style approach — shooting simultaneously across different units to bring the saga alive in a shorter timeline. “It’s too early to say, but we might need multiple directors. If we have to plan it in a certain timeline… because if you do one after another, it will take very long. Like they did in Lord of the Rings. So something like that — in that case, you will need more than one director,” he said.

Talks about Aamir’s Mahabharata adaptation first emerged in 2018, with reports suggesting a staggering budget of over ₹1,000 crore. While Aamir refrained from revealing further details, it’s evident that the project is deeply personal to him — so much so that he once stepped away from another big-budget film to dedicate himself entirely to this epic adaptation.

Back in 2022, during the promotions of Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir had admitted his reservations. “When you are making a film on Mahabharata, you are not just making a film. You are performing a yagya. It is not just a film, it is much more. And, that is why I am not ready for it yet. I am scared of bringing it out. Mahabharata will never let you down, but you may let down Mahabharata,” he told Galatta Plus.

Meanwhile, on the acting front, Aamir is set to return in Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par, scheduled for release in the summer of 2025. The actor recently teased his character in the film as “rude and politically incorrect,” signaling an entirely different flavour from his past roles.
