The announcement of the 65th National Film Awards was held at PIB Conference Room, Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi. The chairpersons of the three juries (Feature, Non-feature and Writing) for the 65th National Film Awards announced the awards for the different categories. This year, the jury was headed by director Shekhar Kapur. The jury panel has 10 members which includes screenwriter Imtiaz Hussain, lyricist Mehboob, South Indian actress Gautami Tadimalla, Kannada director P Sheshadri, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Ranjit Das, Rajesh Mapuskar, Tripurari Sharma and Rumi Jaffrey.

After the announcement, the award ceremony for the 65th National Film Awards will be held on May 3, 2018. The National Film Awards will be presented by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Reacting to Ghazi winning the Best Telugu Film award at the 65th National Film Awards, actor Taapsee Pannu said, "I am elated with the news about Ghazi winning the Best Telugu film. This is the third time I have had the opportunity to be a part of a National Award Winning film. Even though I had a special appearance in the film, it was personally a very satisfying part for me as an actor. I’m ecstatic with the news about the film winning the National Award Honour."
After his film being adjudged as the Best Hindi Film, Newton director Amit V Masurkar said, "I want to thank the jury for awarding Newton the National Award for Best (Hindi) Film. I hope this award and the film's commercial success creates a bigger space for relevant political cinema. This wouldn't have been possible without an incredible cast, crew and the love and support from the people of Chhattisgarh where we shot the film."

Pankaj Tripathi, who played the role of a CRPF Officer in Newton has won a Special Mention Award. Expressing his happiness on the big win, the actor said, "I am absolutely delighted. I had no idea I was even in the running. It feels amazing to know that the whole country thought my role in Newton was one of my best and to win the Special Mention Award at the highest film award in India is just exhilarating. My director and co-actors made it so easy for me to act in this film."
