Can COVID-19 spread more due to unseasonal rains?

Unseasonal rain has been lashing many parts of the country since the beginning of April and May.

As such, it is important to understand the potential impact of these showers, particularly in light of the ongoing surge of Covid-19 cases in India over the last two months.

Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Global Hospitals, Parel, Mumbai said that unseasonal rains can lead to a surge in flu cases.

"These illnesses take a toll on the upper respiratory tract and are of viral origin, including influenza, H3N2, H1N1, and the resurfacing of COVID-19,” she said.

The expert explained that unseasonal rains, leading to influenza and symptoms such as cough, fever, body aches, sore throat, and a runny nose, make the lungs vulnerable to Covid-19 infection.

Unprecedented rains lower the temperature, increase the humidity, and the growth of virus multiplication is certainly more in lower temperature zones.
