IIT Madras recently unveiled BharOS, an AOSP based operating system which comes with no Google apps pre-installed.

It is developed by JandK Operations Private Limited, a company incubated under IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, which is funded by the Indian government.

Based on the same Linux kernel which powers the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), BharOS comes with no default apps (NDA).

It also has a native over-the-air update (NOTA) feature which automatically downloads and installs updates.

Instead of the Google Play Store, it will have Private App Store Services (PASS), which gives users access to a curated list of apps. Users can also sideload Android apps on BharOS.

Right now, there is no information on how one can download or install BharOS, but it is said to run on some Pixel devices.

However, the company said that it wants to partner with major smartphone manufacturers to launch devices powered by BharOS.
