Minutes after the satellite separated from the rocket after nearly 16 minutes of flight, ISRO chairman S Somanath said, “Chandrayaan-3 is on its way to the moon.”

If the soft-landing succeeds, India will become the fourth country in the world--after the United States, Russia, and China--to have achieved this.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission is spread over nearly 40 days with a possible moon rendezvous scheduled for August 23.

If everything goes well, the Chandrayaan-3 will become the world’s first mission to soft-land near the lunar south pole.
