Homebound is India's Oscar entry: How India fared at Academy Awards

India’s hopes for global cinematic recognition as Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound has been announced as the country’s official entry in the Best International Feature category at the 98th Academy Awards. The film stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor. Here's a look at some more Oscar entry from India, over the years.

Mother India

The first Indian film to receive an Oscar nomination was Mehboob Khan's 1957 Hindi-language film Mother India. The film narrowly lost to Federico Fellini's Italian film Nights of Cabiria by a single vote.

Madhumati

The 1958 film Madhumati was selected as India’s official submission for the 31st Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

The World of Apu

The 1959 film did not receive an Oscar nomination, though it was selected as India’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 32nd Academy Awards.

The Big City

This 1963 film, with original title Mahanagar, directed by Satyajit Ray, was selected as India’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 36th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final list of Oscar nominees.

Shatranj Ke Khiladi

The 1977 film, directed by Satyajit Ray, was also India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 51st Academy Awards (1979) but did not get nominated.

Saaransh

This 1984 film, directed by Mahesh Bhatt, was India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 57th Academy Awards (1985) but did not receive a nomination.

Nayakan

The 1987 film, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan, was also India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 60th Academy Awards (1988) but did not make the final list of nominees.

Salaam Bombay!

This 1988 film, directed by Mira Nair, was India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 61st Academy Awards (1989).

Lagaan

This film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and starring Aamir Khan, Lagaan was India’s official entry and became the third Hindi-language film to receive an Oscar nomination in this category, following Mother India (1957) and Salaam Bombay! (1988).
