While bleaching may seem the easiest way to hide face blemishes and colour the hair, it comes with its own disadvantages.

As such, Dr Kiran Sethi, a dermatologist, shared the negative impacts bleach can have on our face and hair. “In the long run, it can make the skin dry, irritated, more sensitive,” said Dr Kiran.

When applied to hair it breaks the hair proteins which can lead to “breakage, frizziness, and dryness,” she added.

Dr Kiran explained that bleach is primarily hydrogen peroxide which is an acid that we put all over our skin.

“Bleaching your skin increases the risk of mercury poisoning as some bleaching creams contain mercury, which is proven to cause lung and kidney damage with prolonged exposure,” Dr Bansal warned.
