Iraq: Army retakes most of Ramadi from IS

Units of the Iraqi Army toured the mostly-liberated city of Ramadi, Wednesday, showing the destruction left behind by Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants. Most of the city's houses show evidence of the militants' stay, including pro-IS graffiti on their walls. Several buildings and houses were marked with the word "Muslim," if their owners supported the militants, while those who opposed them had lost their property, since it became mortmain property of Islamic State. Iraqi Army forces have retaken control of almost the whole city, except for some areas in the north, where fighting against IS is still ongoing, specifically in the areas of Albu Diab and Albu Faraj. The city centre has since been cleared of explosives and improvised explosives. Most of the city's bridges were destroyed by explosives planted by militants. Iraqi forces started repairing Abu Aitha bridge, which links Abu Aitha neighbourhood with the heart of Ramadi. Sajjaria and Malaab neighbourhoods in the east show the most amount of destruction, as they were the main strongholds of militants in the city and saw violent battles between Iraqi forces and IS fighters.
