A 47-year-old woman, accused of allegedly desecrating the Guru Granth Sahib at Ghawaddi village in Ludhiana in October last year, was shot dead Tuesday morning by two assailants.
Balwinder Kaur, who was arrested in the case last year, was out on bail. She was shot outside Gurdwara Manji Sahib at Alamgir.
Police said Kaur was called outside the gurdwara by a man who is learnt to have promised her help in the desecration case.
According to Kaur’s younger son Ranjodh Singh, he and his mother reached the gurdwara in a three-wheeler. The man arrived and had a word with his mother inside the vehicle. A few minutes later, according to Ranjodh Singh, another man came and asked if he could hire the vehicle. When Ranjodh refused, the second man took out a weapon and opened fire at Kaur, police said.
The bullet hit Kaur in the chest, killing her on the spot. Both men also reportedly fired at Ranjodh but he managed to escape unhurt.
Police said the two men threw a letter on the spot that read that they took revenge for the desecration.
The Dehlon police have registered a case of murder against the two accused who have been identified as Gurpreet Singh Jagowal of Amargarh in Sangrur and Nihal Singh of Patiala.
