Sandeep Kumar, 30: The current national record holder in the 50 km walk event, Sandeep Kumar, will be vying for Gold in one of the challenging track events at Rio 2016 Olympics. Sandeep comes from Mehendergarh in Haryana and is currently employed as an army man with the Jat Regiment Centre.
He broke the National record set by Basant Bahadur Rana, who had a timing of 3:56:48 back in 2012 London Olympics, in the 50 Km walk race. Sandeep clocked 3:56:22 in the IAAF World Race Walking Cup at Taicang, China on May 3, 2014, to set the new National record. He continued his consistent performance in the 2nd National Open Race Walking Championships 2014 with a timing of with 4:08:54 in Kochi, Kerala.
Sandeep sealed his spot for the Rio 2016 Olympics with a timing of 1:23:32 in the men’s 20km race walk at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Portugal. He will join Manish Singh Rawat in Rio.
