Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, 21: Chanu is an Indian weightlifter who made a cut in Rio 2016 Olympics. She will represent India in the event in 48kg category. She hails from Manipur state of India. With her performance at the selection trials in Patiala, the 22-year-old has quietly crept into contention for a medal at the Rio Olympics.

Record: At the trials to select who will take India’s two quota spots for the Rio 2016 Olympics, Mirabai Chanu had lifted 85kg in the snatch and 107kg in the clean and jerk for a total lift of 192 kg.She created a new national record, twice, while claiming her Olympic berth. She broke the 12-year-old national record, originally held by her coach and veteran weightlifter Kunjarani Devi, by lifting the largest total in the 48 kg category.

Career highlights: Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won silver medal in the women’s 48 kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow. Gold medal in the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati in 2016. Chanu is trained by Kunjarani Devi, one of the most decorated Indian sportswomen in weightlifting.

Qualification: Saikhom Mirabai Chanu earned the Rio 2016 Olympics ticket after giving getting through in Olympics trials held in Patiala. Mirabai broke the 48kg national record held by Olympian and women’s national coach Kunjarani Devi.
