Rohan Bopanna, 36, is India’s mainstay in the men’s doubles department on tour with his Romanian partner Florin Mergea. Bopanna trained with Mahesh Bhupathi’s father – Bopanna’s partner at London Olympics (his only other Olympic participation) – and now travels full time with his own team and physios. He finished in the top 10 of 2015 – a first in his career – and maintained his foothold in the top 20 for fifth time in six years. Bopanna brings a huge serve to the mix which will be coupled well by Leander Paes in the men’s doubles event. He shares a good rapport with Sania Mirza, his mixed doubles partner, and both are big hitting players with good volleying abilities. Some consider the mixed doubles event to be India’s medal hope at Rio 2016 Olympics. This will be Bopanna’s second Olympics after partnering Mahesh Bhupathi in London and being ousted in the second round.
