PV Sindhu, Pullela Gopichand felicitated on return to India

PV Sindhu returns to India amid roaring reception at the Hyderabad Airport and an open top bus celebrations.

PV Sindhu, silver medallist from Rio Olympics, landed in Hyderabad side-by-side with coach Pullela Gopichand and was given a loud and roaring welcome. To greet her were her parents, P V Ramana and P Vijaya, alongside Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali, and some ministers from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh government. She was garlanded and welcomed by school children too with dignitaries placing shawls around her neck.

Later the duo left in an open top bus with traffic diversions in place along the RGI Airport and Gachibowli Stadium route with people standing in hundreds along the route to welcome her and cheer for the local girl.

1400 hrs IST: After much fanfare, including a gaffe, PV Sindhu and Pullela Gopichand have been felicitated by the state government with many selfies being clicked and thousands thronging the streets and the Gachibowli Stadium to honour the silver medallist.

1330 hrs IST: PV Sindhu thanks her parents and coach Gopichand for the support and guidance that help her land the silver medal. Gopichand on the other hand appreciates the support given by everyone to him and to Sindhu in order for her to bag the silver medal.

Telangana government has organised a gala felicitation in honour of the star shuttler.

The Telangana government had earlier announced Rs 5 crore cash reward for the 21-year-old, a 1,000 square yard housing site near the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Gachibowli and suitable government job, if she is willing. The shuttler is scheduled to meet the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at his camp office.

Telangana government had also announced cash prize of Rs 1 crore for Sindhu’s coach Gopichand.
