Name: Achanta Sharath Kamal, 34, hails from Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India. Sharath’s maiden appearcne at the Olympics came during the Athens 2004 Olympics but failed to qualify for 2012 London Games after losing out on 4 chance to qualify. Paddler achieved his career best ranking of 32 in the world but with back to back injuries Kamal is currently placed 69. Due to injuries he was asked to end his career but with determination and love for the sport he slowly and gradually qualified for the upcoming mega event. Paddler who likes to listen to music, collecting coins and play some other sports like football in his free time. Besides playing Table Tennis, he likes to play guitar.
As a prominent and successful player, Achanta Sharath Kamal has participated in several national and international championships, some of which are- Spanish First League, Asian Championship, Pro Tour Chile Open, World Table Tennis Championship, Commonwealth Championship and Pro Tour Japan Open.
Career Highlights: Being India’s one of the best Paddler’s so far, Sharath Kamal has some famous wins to his name. In July 2010, Kamal went on to defeat US Open defending champion Thomas Keinath in an epic battle of 7 games to win 4-3. In the same year he won the Egypt Open beating Li Ching, by doing so he became the first ever Indian to win singles title on the ITTF Pro Tour.
Qualifying event: Sharath qualified after beating Iran’s Noshad Alamiyan 4-3 in the last round at the Asian Olympic qualification event in Hong Kong
Record: He has two gold medals to his name that the paddler won at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games; a gold and bronze at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth games.
Event: Sharath will represent India at the Rio 2016 Olympics in table tennis men’s singles and team event.
